Introduction To Work Incentives

Work incentives are rules that make it possible for people with disabilities to receive income from work and still receive Social Security benefits, Medicare, and/or Medicaid.

Medicaid - A state program providing healthcare to individuals and families with low income. Earning too much income used to cause the loss of Medicaid benefits, but new programs allow some clients to keep their benefits.

Medicare - A federal program providing healthcare to individuals over 65 or with certain disabilities.

Social Security - Social Security clients used to lose their benefits when their income passed a certain threshold, but new programs allow some benefits to continue while recieving extra income from work.

Ticket To Work - The goal of the Ticket to Work program is to assist people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) obtain employment and earn enough money to end the need for cash benefits. The program is voluntary.

Tax Incentives - For most people with disabilities who go back to work, paying taxes is not the first thing that comes to mind, nor the most enjoyable. Depending on your income level and your disability, you may not have to pay taxes, but it is important to file a tax return. In fact, some people actually get additional cash benefits.
