If an individual stops working within five years of their benefits being terminated due to earnings, they may be able to restart their benefits by applying Expedited Reinstatement (EXR). Expedited reinstatement requires the following:

  • Previous benefits were terminated due to work earnings.
  • Beneficiary is currently unable to work due to a medical impairment that is the same as, or related to, the original disabling impairment.
  • EXR request is within five years of the month benefits were stopped.

While the applicant’s medical status is being re-evaluated, they can receive up to 6 months of provisional benefits. These benefits do not have to be repaid if the request is ultimately denied.
