After individuals have been disabled for one year, Social Security encourages beneficiaries to test their ability to re-enter the work force. To accomplish this objective, they begin a timeline that includes a Trial Work Period (TWP), Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE), and Expedited Reinstatement (EXR).

The Trial Work Period lasts nine non-consecutive months.

The Extended Period of Eligibility lasts 36 consecutive months. Work incentive programs such as [Impairment Related Work Expenses], [Subsidies and Special Conditions] are available during and after this period.

The Cessation and Grace Period begins the month benefits are terminated and lasts for two additional months.

Expedited Reinstatement is available for 5 years after the month benefits are terminated.
